“Restaurants” Without Seating?

November 13th, 2018 RSS feed icon

hinged containers with food in them next to delivery/takeout bagWe all know the restaurant industry is changing. In the past 2 years delivery and takeout have really taken off. We’ve seen drive-throughs modernize. Meal kits were launched, eaten up by the public, and have already seen a change to the way they are purchased by teaming up with local supermarkets to make it easier for consumers. All these changes have been made possible by paying attention to customer wants and needs.

As delivery and pick up demands change, restaurants are developing more streamlined concepts. The term “ghost restaurants” has been created to describe a location that does not have the traditional consumer experience. There is nowhere to sit. Nowhere to chat with friends over a beverage. You’re lucky if they have a public restroom. What does this mean? Ghost restaurants are, essentially, kitchens pumping out food for delivery and takeout.

The newest adopter of this kind of restaurant is Chick-fil-A. Chick-fil-A has been innovating as quickly as possible in the new restaurant space. Back in August they announce they would be entering the meal kit business in Atlanta. We will see what happens with the test market but it expands their service area. New menu items were created for the meal kits, increasing their reach into a different kind of consumer.

Chick-fil-A has decided to test out two units that are a bit untraditional. One will focus on catering, delivery and carryout with a small area for counter ordering, the second will not have a counter for ordering at all. As demand grows for the chains catering, these locations will help to service the current full-service store in the areas.

Mobile ordering, delivery, and speed are huge contenders driving these changes. As customers change the way the order and consume food on the go, it’s really time to start focusing on how you can enhance the consumer experience outside of the restaurant space. Packaging should be a larger consideration when thinking about long-term operations. Incremental sales will increase if a restaurant can get the same in-dining experience outside of the restaurant.

At Genpak we manufacture container to suit all the needs of the customer. Fresh and crispy, use a vented container like Clover. Keep food separated in close off containers from ProView. Food Packaging Has Changed At NRA 2018

May 24th, 2018 RSS feed icon

hinged food containers filled with food

One of the largest restaurant shows was over the weekend in Chicago. National Restaurant Association Show (NRA) brings together everything you could possibly need for a restaurant, commercial kitchen, and startup. Walking the show you’re sure to get 10,000 steps in for the day, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

During our walk of the nearly 2,500 vendors you could see the clear growth into technology. There’s an entire section now devoted to making restaurants more efficient. From foodservice orders of food packaging and disposables, to front of house ordering systems, there’s a digital solution for everything.

The food packaging sphere at the show has changed a bit. The industry has been transitioning away from polystyrene containers to more recyclable options with a better life cycle story. At Genpak we are working on broadening our microwave safe, reusable containers, as well as our compostable product offerings. With focus on better treatment of the environment all plastics manufacturers are looking to streamline processes to protect Mother Earth. Bamboo and molded fiber had a major presence at the show. Check out our Harvest Fiber containers to learn more about our compostable and biodegradable products. Our Green Room has great information highlighting our processes as well as end of life plans for the containers used in restaurants.

Knowing Your Plastics: Recycling Symbols No. 1 to 7

May 8th, 2018 RSS feed icon

plastic resin identification codes

Have you ever wondered what the number inside the arrowed triangle means at the bottom of a plastic product? That logo printed on your plastic is known as a Resin Identification Code or RIC, which a set of symbols used to identify the type of resin from which a plastic product is made. Created by The Society of the Plastics, the system was introduced to U.S. recycling facilities in the late 1980s as a method of reprocessing plastics for further use and manufacturing. Today, the resin code system has become a useful tool for consumers after an increased public awareness of recycling.

What is Resin?

Before plastic is transformed into a product, it starts out in the form of tiny pellets known as resin. Resin is the base of the manufacturing process and have various properties. The pellets undergo a molding method where the plastic is transformed; but the way a product is manufactured depends on the type of resin used. For example, the forming process from P.E.T. resin will be different from the forming process of polystyrene resin, which is why the RIC system is important.

Do Genpak products contain BPA (Bisphenol-A)?

Are These Containers Safe In The Microwave? How To Tell If Something Is Safe For The Microwave.

March 5th, 2018 RSS feed icon

We have all been there. The moment you go to reheat your leftovers and you’re not sure they can go in as is. Below are some instructions to ensure your container can handle the microwave.

  • Check the bottom of the container for a symbol. Microwave safe is usually a microwave with some wavy lines on it. If they container has a #5 on it, it is made from polypropylene, PP, so it is generally considered microwave safe. Smart Set Pro and ProView are perfect for microwave applications.microwave safe iconsSmart Set Pro food containers
  • CPET, #1 is safe for the microwave. These containers are usually used for oven ready applications like our meal solutions and bakery trays. Not to be confused the APET, CPET has been crystallized meaning it can withstand much higher temperatures.  CPET products are NEVER clear.
  • APET(E), #1 is not safe for the microwave. These are deli containers, supermarket containers, water bottles, and most containers used for cold foods and display packaging. They are recyclable but not safe to reheat in.
  • PS, polystyrene, Styrofoam, #7 is not safe for the microwave. Most take out containers and clamshells are made of foam for its insulation properties. They keep food warm during transport so you don’t have to reheat them. Be sure to put your food on a plate or other safe container before zapping them in the microwave.
  • Harvest Fiber containers are not recommended for microwave use. They are all natural and compostable.Harvest Fiber food containers
  • Paper products should not go in the microwave since many of them are coated, sealed, or glued to stay together. These additives could leak into your food.
