National Manufacturing Day

October 3rd, 2014 RSS feed icon

Today is National Manufacturing Day! People ask me all the time who I work for and when I tell them it is Genpak, they usually say, what do they do? My favorite thing to say is, although you likely have never heard of us, I can almost guarantee at one point in your life, you have used one of our products. Whether it is the tray that held your pound of ground beef, the container that housed your favorite take out meal or the packaging your local grocery store uses in their bakery department…there’s a good chance it was a Genpak product. As a manufacturer ourselves, we support National Manufacturing Day! It is companies like ours and countless others that have helped make America a great country. Shake the hand of someone who works in the manufacturing industry today. You’ll be glad you did!

Manufacturing In The USA!

As you know, at Genpak we manufacture 99% of everything we sell.  We have 14 manufacturing sites in the United States and 5 in Canada, along with our corporate headquarters here in beautiful Glens Falls, NY.  Making our own products, and not just reselling someone else’s, gives our people a sense of pride that is shown in the wonderful quality our products have, which Genpak has come to be synonymous with.  There certainly is something to be said about products Made In America!  This video produced by the National Association of Manufacturers (which we are proud members of) does an excellent job of capturing this sentiment and is worth watching.

Hinged Food Containers: How They Are Made

You know, it dawned on me that we have spent the last three years talking about all this great food packaging, but we really have not described or shown you how we actually make our products. I don’t know about you, but I find myself drawn into watching those cable shows on how various things are made, like a bug to a shiny light. Somehow I always come away feeling better that I now know how glass Christmas tree ornaments are actually made. Along that same vein, allow me to give you a crash course in how our products are made.

Although it is a highly sophisticated and complex transformation from resin pellets to finished parts, it can really be broken down into two main functions. Extrusion and thermoforming. In the extrusion process we take the raw material which we call resin (they look like little pellets), and melt them down to form smooth sheets of material. To do this the resin enters the extruder at one end where it is pushed forward via a screw. As it’s pushed forward a combination of heat and pressure produced from the screw, slowly melts the resin. When the molten material reaches the end of the extruder, it exits over the die which gives it its new shape…a sheet of plastic. Here are a couple of pictures that will help aide in the description. In this shot we see the actual extruder and the foamed polystyrene material exiting, being split into two sheets and heading toward the S-wrap.

Following that process further, here’s the end of the extrusion line as the sheet exits the S-wrap, which is a devise used to Read the rest of this entry »

Relay for Life

April 1st, 2011 RSS feed icon

Believe it or not, we aren’t always about the foodservice packaging here at Genpak. Within the walls of this bulking packaging giant of a company dwells people who care about other people. For many years now Genpak folks have been heavily involved with the local Relay For Life program that benefits the American Cancer Society. Things are done such as $2 casual Thursdays, ice cream socials, raffles and other fun events that raise much needed money to help fight cancer. On April 16th we will be participating in the ProShred event which helps combat identity theft. All proceeds from that event go to our Relay for Life fund. Also coming up April 23rd is our annual Doggiewalk fundraiser. Folks from all around our local communities here in the Glens Falls, NY area show up in-toe with mans best friend. If you are going to be in the neighborhood, stop by and join in the fun. This all culminates on June 3rd for our area annual Relay For Life event held at the Queensbury, NY school track. Individuals and teams from all around come and walk the track in support of this great cause. Genpak is a proud supporter. Keep up the great work team!

Who are we?

April 6th, 2009 RSS feed icon

We are a company comprised of people all working toward a common goal of providing our customers with top quality foodservice packaging products with top quality service. It’s as simple as that. I won’t go into the usual sales pitch about the products we produce. For that you can easily access the product pages of our web site. Here I’d like to tell you about the quality that sets Genpak apart from the field. It is the quality that many of our long-term customers have known forever and one our newer customers are quickly realizing. That quality is our people. A company can make the greatest product in the world (which we do…sorry couldn’t resist), but unless it has a team of professionals dedicated to ensure consistent quality and consistent service, it would never take root. This is where we rise to the top.  Our team of sales professionals are well known and respected as Clark, Genpak employeeknowing their business and geographic markets they service. You’ll also quickly learn they are a fun bunch of folks to deal with who will treat you fair and honest.

We also have what is probably the most experienced group of engineers and operations people that keep our 17 manufacturing facilities running like well-oiled machines. While many companies look to isolate their manufacturing sites from their customers for fear of what they might think or see, we on the other hand, find that a plant tour, no matter which plant, usually seals the deal and sets our customer’s mind at ease. It is not because our plants are meticulously clean and bright, or that they consistently score “superior” on their third-party audits.  It is because the people who make these plants come alive are dedicated and proud to call these state-of-the-art facilities their own. Common comments from customers who tour our plants are generally concentrated around the people who work there and their knowledge of the facility and equipment used to produce our products.

old Genpak headquarters in Glens FallsFinally, our administrative office located in beautiful Upstate New York at the foothills of the Adirondack Park, is packed with professionals whose task it is to support our customer base. No matter the department, you’ll find people who are willing to help you.

Listen, don’t take my word for it. Check out some of the testimonials we’ve received from satisfied customers. Or better yet, pick up the phone and give us a call. Make up your own mind. I’m confident that after a few minutes you’ll come to know what our customers already know. It is the people they work with here at Genpak that keeps them coming back.
