Food Packaging News

March 30th, 2012

The city leaders of Hermosa Beach, CA have voted to increase the cost of doing business on already struggling restaurant and grocery store operations in their community. They have done so by instituting a governmental ban on polystyrene food packaging. Now these businesses will be forced by the government, to source alternative packaging solutions that could be as much as 3 times as expensive as their current choice. As I’ve said a hundred times before, if food operators choose to go the route of compostable food packaging, we support that 100%. In fact our line of Harvest Fiber products would fit that need. What we oppose is the local government forcing companies who may not be ready to handle such a transition, to do so. All this ban will do is replace one type of litter for another, put undo pressure on already hurting businesses and outsource jobs to China. Yes, most polystyrene foam foodservice products are produced right here in the U.S., while nearly all compostable packaging comes from China.

Edible food packaging. Sounds like something right out of Willy Wonka. Wonder what the nutritional value is?

Is sustainable packaging starting to catch on? This particular article indicates sustainability plays a major roll in consumers minds when making purchases. Food Packaging New: Trends for Food Packaging

March 9th, 2012

Flexible food packaging for processors is becoming all the rage. With good reason really. Lightweight, low cube, increased shelf life and great graphics to boot. The good news is, you don’t need to look far for good flexible packaging solutions.

Recycled content in food packaging plays a big role in consumer’s choices at the retail shelf. Packaging is playing a much more important role than in years past. Food safety, integrity and merchandising are all huge factors when choosing the correct packaging.

Panda Restaurant group is testing a brand new plate that allows consumer’s to choose three slightly smaller entree portions instead of two larger portions. I really like that design. That plate manufacturer is really on the ball :)

Campbell Soups decide to move away from BPA lining in soup cans. This is a case where a company was confident in the safety of its products, but still made the choice to make a change based on consumer demand. Who knows if there was a significant percentage of consumers that had strong opinions on this matter or not. My guess is probably not, but it still highlights the power consumers have in the products they choose to support.

Food Packaging News: Fun Food Packaging

Paper based food packaging is on the rise.

U of FL dining facilities go “green”.

The science of food and food packaging. A long and intense article on food packaging and the science behind the quest for increased shelf life. Something the “non-packaging” crowd often times forgets. If it were not for innovative food packaging solutions, food spoilage and waste would be even greater than it already is today.

Sabra Humus. You need to sit through a quick commercial, but about 2 minutes in you’ll see a great looking package that holds the best humus on the planet.

Creepie food packaging art work. Yeah I’d say these should have been reviewed before release. I especially find the blueberries a little disturbing.

Another community attempting to ban one type of litter for another. Say hello to higher restaurant bills and colder food when you get it home.

Canned food benefits. I wonder what makes some canned foods more nutritious than their fresh or frozen counterpart? Bullet point 2 in this article.

The right packaging design can mean the difference between a sale and not.

Hermosa Beach city council just voted to raise the average price of a restaurant meal and/or squeeze already struggling businesses out of existence. Why? To trade one kind of litter for another. Makes perfect sense to me.

Markham is a community with leaders who have some foresight. They don’t ban their way through issues, they find workable solutions. Bravo! The city leaders of Hermosa Beach should take a page from Markham’s play book.

Bring your own dishes? I applaud all those who try to do more with less. We practice that everyday in our business, but this person’s arguments are not well thought out. They probably did not consider that for the convention center in question to actually use china dishes instead of single use products, they actually used far more natural resources than the alternative. Those dishes don’t wash themselves. Thousands of gallons of water, huge amounts of electricity (usually from coal power) to run the industrial washers, not to mention all the heavy chemicals it takes to actually clean those permanent plates. There’s no easy answer but I’ll bet a paycheck none of these people even considered this. Also, the practice of giving restaurants your own dishes from home to put food in is extremely unsafe. Sure, you know your dishes are clean, but what about the next guy that brings his home dishes in for the restaurant owner to bring to the back of the house for filling? I don’t know about you, but I’d feel much more secure in the cleanliness of single use products touching all those cooking and preparation surfaces than some other guys dishes off the street. No thanks! And by the way, #6 polystyrene is NOT toxic. Get your facts straight next time.

It was sort of a slow news week. Of course there is always the radical blogger spouting off half truths and incorrect data in an attempt to scare people from one substrate to another, but none were worth posting here. Enjoy.

Boost food sales with the right take out packaging. Of course, we’ve got the best line of take out containers and dine in food packaging available today!

QR codes will soon be on everything from food packaging to outdoor advertising.

Very neat end of life scenario for food packaging.

Packaging News Worth a Look

October 7th, 2011

I wish we spent more time talking about this topic of food waste. This short piece makes a lot of sense but is seldom discussed.

Really? Should it be up to the packaging companies to design their containers so skunks won’t get stuck in them? Maybe this blogger should spend more time throwing stones at the careless litterbugs out there.

Pack Expo breaks attendance records. It’s amazing just how large the packaging industry really is.

Big companies think big when it comes to green packaging.

Packaging is more than just a means of transporting an item.

Styrofoam the great evil! Are you scared now? Don’t be. This article is a perfect example of someone who writes as if they have researched a topic, but in fact have done little to no research at all. Nearly all of the “facts” this person sites are completely inaccurate, misleading and contradictory to proven science. I love the comments at the end by folks who are in the know.

Packaging can influence buying decisions across all markets. Carrots in vending machines? Brilliant!

Foodservice packaging plays a critical role in the success or lack thereof in many food operations. It can no longer be looked at as an after thought, but rather part of the solutions to achieve business success.

Considerations that should be mulled over when contemplating new food packaging options.

Your old buddy Ken will be on vacation next week, but rest assured, he’ll be back the following week to keep you informed and entertained.

Packaging that extends food shelf life. Now that makes sense. Food spoilage/waste is a major contributor to the solid waste stream.

Sacramento legislature mulls over a bill that would most certainly kill jobs, stagnate local eatery businesses and drive up consumer prices. If you oppose this, email Alan Lowenthal who is the author of this job killing bill and tell him so. Instead tell him to support increased trash collection and to clamp down on litter bugs.

Salinas City Council has just passed a job killing bill that will do nothing more than put pressure on already strained local restaurant owners trying to make a living. Congratulations to all the council members for their incredible short sighted and misguided views. What better way to drive tourists and visitors away from a community than to make it more expensive to dine out. Why don’t these legislators listen to businesses?  Beats me.

Food packaging helps reduce the massive food waste issue. Here’s what the people on the Salinas council don’t want you to know.
